Musical Trail at The Grove

The Grove Hotel in Watford is well-known as a luxury countryside retreat on the outskirts of London. But did you know it also has its own woodlands, with a variety of trails to enjoy? I took advantage of a child-free morning to check it out, but will definitely be going back with the little ones in tow!

On arriving at The Grove I followed the driveway to the hotel (there’s a bridge with traffic lights that take a while to change!), then followed signs to the car park by Anouska’s nursery. There’s ample free parking here, although it will be busier during weekends and holiday periods.

I followed the path around the side of the nursery and children’s play area, until I found an entrance into the woodlands. I went a bit off the beaten track here, finding log circles, ponds and wild flowers.

I even stumbled across some natural weaving art! Great for an undirected wander and explore. Note, if you plan to wander off-course there are protected areas for bluebells, and you might find thorns and nettles in the undergrowth!

If you stick to the path, you’ll come to the main track through the woodlands. Head along it to the right, and you’ll find the signpost directing you to the different trails available. I was here to try the musical trail, as at 1 mile it’s a perfect length for little legs.

The path is smooth, flat and wide, so absolutely fine for toddlers, prams or wheelchairs. I discovered 7 giant musical stops along the way. Each one is in its own clearing, surrounded by wooden log fencing, and includes a bench or chairs.

They are evenly spaced along the trail, easy to spot and with big spaces around them. You only have to walk for a minute or two to get to the next one, so no chance of getting bored by a long walk! At the end of the trail, you can choose to go back the way you came, or loop around for a longer route.

The walk amongst the trees, flowers, birds and other wildlife is lovely in itself, and the musical stops will keep little ones interested. If you’re up for a longer adventure you could try the wildlife trail (just under 2 miles) or walking route (4 miles).

If you are planning to do one of these, the only thing to note is that there aren’t any toilet or food and drink facilities available unless you are visiting The Grove hotel or restaurants. You could bring a picnic to have at one of the musical stops, or you might just have to book in for a fancy lunch afterwards, just in case!
